Knotty Alder Finish Samples in Three Distinct Tones

Our alder finish samples show the three stains we offer on knotty alder, the wood behind about 95% of James & James furniture: Harvest Wheat, Tobacco and Charred Ember. Order them to see how each tone looks in your home before choosing a finish for a custom piece.

What is knotty alder?

  • Origin: sourced from the Pacific Northwest.
  • Share of our work: about 95% of the pieces we build.
  • Character: visible knots, grain and natural color variation.
  • Top surfaces: knots are filled for a smooth, usable surface.

Knotty alder is the wood most of our tables, beds and benches are built from, and it is the reason so many James & James pieces have a relaxed, lived-in warmth. Its knots and grain are part of solid wood, not defects, so each piece carries its own pattern.

Because alder is our most-used wood, its three finishes appear across the widest range of designs, from dining tables and benches to beds and desks. Choosing an alder finish first often makes it easier to coordinate several pieces later.

The Three Alder Finishes

  • Harvest Wheat: a golden, honeyed tone that brightens interiors.
  • Tobacco: a warm, earthy brown that feels timeless and balanced.
  • Charred Ember: an intense, near-black brown with dramatic elegance.

The three samples span light to dark, which makes them easy to compare at once. Harvest Wheat feels luminous in a sunny kitchen, Tobacco sits comfortably in a traditional dining room, and Charred Ember gives a bedroom or study a grounded, dramatic anchor.

Seeing Alder in Your Own Space

  • Light changes: honeyed tones read warmer at sunset, darker tones deeper at night.
  • Pairing: test samples beside upholstery, metals and wall color.
  • Finish: each is hand-applied and sealed with polyurethane.

Place the samples where the furniture will live and look at them over a full day. Because alder takes stain with natural variation, a sample shows the tone and texture to expect rather than an exact copy of your finished piece. Expect gentle shifts in color from one board to the next.

Choose an Alder Finish Made for Life

  • Shop by finish: see furniture in each alder stain.
  • Compare species: view every finish sample in one place.

Alder Finish Samples FAQs

What finishes are available on knotty alder?

Knotty alder is offered in three finishes: Harvest Wheat, a golden, honeyed tone; Tobacco, a warm, earthy brown; and Charred Ember, an intense, near-black brown. The alder finish samples cover all three, so you can compare light, medium and dark side by side.

What is knotty alder wood?

Knotty alder is a solid American hardwood sourced from the Pacific Northwest, and it makes up about 95% of the pieces James & James builds. It shows visible knots, grain and natural color variation, and knots on top surfaces are filled for a smooth, usable surface.

Why choose an alder finish first when furnishing several rooms?

Alder is our most-used wood, so its three finishes appear across the widest range of designs, from dining tables and benches to beds and desks. Settling on Harvest Wheat, Tobacco or Charred Ember first often makes it easier to coordinate several pieces later.

Does knotty alder take stain evenly?

Knotty alder takes stain with natural variation, so expect gentle shifts in color from one board to the next. An alder sample shows the tone and texture to expect rather than an exact copy of your finished piece, which will carry its own knots and grain.

How do alder samples look in different light?

Alder samples shift noticeably through the day: honeyed tones such as Harvest Wheat read warmer at sunset, while deeper tones like Charred Ember look darker at night. Place the samples where the furniture will live and check them beside your upholstery, metals and wall color.
