Solid Wood Bedroom Furniture for a Calm, Lasting Retreat
James & James solid wood bedroom furniture includes beds, dressers, tall chests, nightstands, benches and end tables for people who want a bedroom that feels restful and is built to last. Each piece is made to order from American hardwood and finished by hand.
The bedroom is the room you see first and last every day. It should feel quiet, well proportioned and easy to live in.
Beds, Dressers and Nightstands in One Collection
- Beds: designs such as the Harlow, Holden, Lennon, Sawyer, Sloane and Stella.
- Dressers and chests: the Bennett and Jensen families, from a 5 Drawer Dresser to a Tall Chest.
- Nightstands: 1 and 3 drawer options in both the Bennett and Jensen designs.
- Benches and end tables: the Chateau and Fulton benches, the Floating Top End Table and the Vivien Side Table.
The Bennett and Jensen families make it easy to build a matched set, with nightstands, dressers and tall chests that share a design language. For something more sculptural, the Olivia Bed, Olivia Arch Bed and Olivia Poster Bed bring soft curves to the room, and the Olivia Bench can sit at the foot of the bed.
Should Bedroom Furniture Match?
- Matched sets: a bed, dresser and nightstands in one design create a calm, unified room.
- Coordinated mix: pairing different designs in one finish keeps the room cohesive with more character.
- Contrast: a lighter dresser beside a deeper bed adds layers without feeling busy.
- Upholstered beds: fabric headboards soften a room built mostly from hardwood.
There is no single right answer. Many bedrooms feel best with one anchoring finish repeated across two or three pieces and a single contrasting accent, such as a bench or side table. If you are unsure, our finish color guide shows each tone side by side, and finish samples let you judge them in your own morning and evening light.
Woods and Finishes for the Bedroom
- Species: about 95% of our pieces are knotty alder, with oak, white oak and black walnut by design.
- Light tones: Harvest Wheat on alder and Oat on oak keep a bedroom bright and airy.
- Deeper tones: Espresso on oak and Charred Ember on alder feel grounding and restful.
- Protection: a polyurethane topcoat helps guard against water rings, stains and scratches.
Knotty alder brings visible grain and natural knots that give a dresser top or headboard real character. Oak shows a more open, textured grain, while walnut offers a naturally deep tone. Select bed frames are made by Amish and Mennonite partner woodworkers in the US, and the rest are built in our Arkansas woodshop.
