Solid Wood Dining Tables Built to Order for Everyday Gathering

James & James solid wood dining tables are handcrafted from American hardwoods and built to order in our Arkansas woodshop for households that want one table to carry weeknight dinners and holiday crowds for years. The collection spans 33 designs in rectangular, round, square, oval and expandable shapes.

Each table starts with the room it will live in. You choose the size, finish and options on the product page, and we build it from there.

Dining Table Shapes and Styles

  • Rectangular: 13 designs, including the Farmhouse, Trestle, Fern and Ava Parsons dining tables.
  • Round: four designs, including the Josephine, Shiloh and Violet round dining tables.
  • Square: six designs, such as the Baluster Square and French Country Square.
  • Oval: four designs, including the Emersen and Thaden oval dining tables.
  • Expandable: six designs that make room for extra guests, from the Bailey to the Heirloom Round Expandable.

Rectangular tables suit long rooms and larger families, and they give a clear head of the table for hosting. Round and square tables keep everyone within easy reach of the conversation, which makes them a natural fit for breakfast nooks and square rooms. Oval tables soften the corners of a rectangle while keeping its length.

Several designs come in more than one shape. The Heirloom, for example, is offered as a rectangular, round, square, oval and expandable table, so you can keep a favorite style and change only the footprint.

How Big a Dining Table Do I Need?

  • Rectangular seating: 6, 8, 10 and 12 ft tables seat 6, 8, 10 and 12.
  • Rectangular sizing: lengths run 4 to 12 ft in half-foot steps, with widths of 37, 42 or 45 in.
  • Round seating: 48, 54, 60 and 72 in tables seat 4, 4 to 5, 5 to 6 and 6 to 8.
  • Square seating: 46, 55, 60 and 66 in tables seat 4, 4 to 8, 8 and 8.

Size the table for the number of people you seat most nights, then think about the gatherings that happen a few times a year. If the gap between the two is large, an expandable table lets the room stay open day to day. Round tables are also available in a 66 in diameter, and square tables run from 46 to 72 in.

Wood Species and Finishes

  • Wood: about 95% of our pieces are knotty alder from the Pacific Northwest, with oak, white oak and black walnut available by design.
  • Alder finishes: Harvest Wheat, Tobacco and Charred Ember.
  • Oak finishes: Oat, Almond, Sable and Espresso.
  • Protection: a hand-applied stain sealed with a polyurethane topcoat helps protect against water, stains and scratches.

Solid wood carries grain, knots and color variation that make every tabletop its own. Knots on the top surface are filled so the table stays smooth for plates and elbows. Harvest Wheat brightens a room with a honeyed glow, Tobacco sits in the warm middle, and Charred Ember anchors a space with a near-black depth. Ordering finish samples lets you see each tone in your own light first.

Should I buy an expandable dining table?
