Dining Room Furniture for a Room Built Around Gathering

James & James dining room furniture brings together solid wood dining tables, dining chairs, benches and stools for households that want a dining room people actually use. Every table is built to order in our Arkansas woodshop, and every piece is made from solid American hardwood.

A good dining room does not need perfectly matched pieces. It needs a table sized for the way you gather, seating that invites people to stay, and finishes that feel at home together.

What You Will Find in the Dining Room Collection

  • Dining tables: rectangular, round, square, oval and expandable designs, such as the Francesca, Fulton Oval and Shiloh Round.
  • Dining chairs: arm and side chairs, including the Eleanor, Hadley, Henry, Maria and William.
  • Benches and stools: bench seating for a table side and stools for the kitchen island or counter.
  • Who makes them: tables come from our Arkansas woodshop, and dining chairs are made by Amish and Mennonite partner woodworkers in the US.

Start with the table, since its shape and size set the layout for everything else. A long rectangular table gives a formal room a clear center, while a round or square table keeps a breakfast room relaxed and conversational. Expandable designs such as the Farmhouse Expandable or French Country Expandable stay compact day to day and open up when the family comes over.

How Do I Pair Dining Chairs With a Dining Table?

  • Arm and side chairs: many rooms place arm chairs at the ends and side chairs along the length.
  • Bench seating: a bench on one side seats children easily and tucks neatly under the table.
  • Finish: chairs can match the table or offer a deliberate contrast in tone.
  • Upholstery: fabrics range from bouclé and velvet to linen and Ultra Leather.

Mixing is often what makes a dining room feel collected rather than staged. A warm Tobacco table can sit comfortably with chairs in a lighter or darker finish, and an upholstered chair in Latte velvet or Oatmeal performance linen softens a room full of hardwood. Order fabric swatches and finish samples to compare them side by side.

Solid Wood, Finished by Hand

  • Species: mostly knotty alder from the Pacific Northwest, plus oak, white oak and black walnut by design.
  • Finish: hand-applied stain sealed with a polyurethane topcoat that helps protect against water, stains and scratches.
  • Character: grain, knots and color variation are part of solid wood, and top-surface knots are filled.
  • Use: our furniture is made for indoor rooms only.

Natural variation means no two tables look exactly alike, and that individuality tends to read as warmth once the room is set. Measurements can vary by up to an inch, which is normal for furniture built by hand from real boards.

Dining Room FAQs

What furniture do I need for a dining room?

Most dining rooms begin with a table and seating. From there, benches or stools can add flexibility depending on the room layout and how your household gathers. The right combination depends on the size of the space, seating needs, and how often you host.

Does all of my dining room furniture need to match?

No. Dining room furniture can feel cohesive without matching exactly. Coordinating wood tones, finishes, upholstery, proportions, or design details can create a more collected and personal room.

How do I choose the right dining table for my room?

Start with the size and shape of the room, then consider how many people you seat most often, how much walking space you need, and whether you want flexibility for larger gatherings. Rectangular, round, oval, square, and expandable tables each create a different relationship between seating and room flow.

Can I mix dining chairs and benches?

Yes. Combining chairs and a bench can create a more relaxed, flexible dining arrangement. A bench often works well along one side of the table while chairs provide individual seating around the remaining sides.

Why choose solid wood dining room furniture?

Solid wood dining furniture offers natural grain, warmth, and lasting character. It also gives the room a more substantial foundation and can adapt well as finishes, upholstery, and surrounding décor change over time.
