Dining Tables and Chairs Chosen to Work Together

The James & James Table & Chair Collection brings our dining tables and chairs into one place, so you can plan a complete dining set rather than shopping for each piece separately. It is for anyone furnishing a dining room or breakfast room from the table outward.

Tables are built to order in our Arkansas woodshop, and dining chairs are made by Amish and Mennonite partner woodworkers in the US. Both are solid American hardwood with a hand-applied finish.

Planning a Complete Dining Set

  • Start with the table: its shape and size decide how many chairs you need.
  • Classic pairing: the Farmhouse Dining Table with the Rustic Windsor Dining Chair.
  • Arm and side chairs: the Eleanor, Everly and Gina come in matching versions.
  • Upholstered seating: the Lynn Upholstered Dining Chair softens a hardwood set.

Choosing a table and chairs together solves the most common dining room problem: chairs that are the wrong height, width or tone for the table they sit at. Seeing them side by side makes it easier to judge proportion, and it helps you picture the finished room before anything is built.

How Many Chairs Do I Need for My Table?

  • Rectangular: 6, 8, 10 and 12 ft tables seat 6, 8, 10 and 12.
  • Round: 48, 54, 60 and 72 in tables seat 4, 4 to 5, 5 to 6 and 6 to 8.
  • Square: 46, 55, 60 and 66 in tables seat 4, 4 to 8, 8 and 8.
  • Arm chairs: plan them for the ends, where there is width to spare.

Count the people at your table on an ordinary weeknight, then buy for that number. Extra chairs can live along a wall or in another room until a holiday calls for them. If you seat more on the sides than the ends, side chairs such as the Henry, Klein or Quinn keep spacing comfortable.

Should Dining Chairs Match the Table Finish?

  • Matched: one finish across table and chairs reads as calm and traditional.
  • Contrasting: a darker chair around a lighter table, or the reverse, adds depth.
  • Alder tones: Harvest Wheat, Tobacco and Charred Ember move from light to near-black.
  • Oak tones: Oat, Almond, Sable and Espresso offer a similar range on oak.

Both approaches work. A matched set in Tobacco feels timeless and balanced, while Charred Ember chairs around a Harvest Wheat table make the table the bright center of the room. Natural grain and color variation mean even matched pieces show a little individuality, which is part of the appeal of solid wood.

The Table & Chair Collection FAQs

What is the James & James Table & Chair Collection?

The Table & Chair Collection puts our solid wood dining tables and dining chairs on one page so you can plan a complete dining set at once. It includes tables such as the Farmhouse Dining Table alongside chairs like the Henry, Klein, Maria, Quinn and Rustic Windsor Dining Chairs.

How many dining chairs do I need for my table?

Plan one chair per seat at the table size you choose: rectangular tables at 6, 8, 10 and 12 ft seat 6, 8, 10 and 12, and round tables at 48, 54, 60 and 72 in seat 4, 4 to 5, 5 to 6 and 6 to 8. Buy for your usual weeknight count and keep extras for holidays.

Should dining chairs match the table finish?

Dining chairs do not have to match the table finish, and both approaches work well. One finish across table and chairs feels calm and traditional, while a contrast, such as Charred Ember chairs around a Harvest Wheat table, adds depth. Natural grain variation gives even matched pieces a little individuality.

Where should arm chairs and side chairs go at a dining table?

Arm chairs usually go at the ends of a dining table, where there is width to spare, and side chairs line the long sides. The Eleanor, Everly and Gina come in matching arm and side versions, so you can mix the two within one design and keep the set consistent.

Who makes the dining chairs in the Table & Chair Collection?

Our dining chairs are made by Amish and Mennonite partner woodworkers in the US, while our dining tables are built to order in our Arkansas woodshop. Both are solid American hardwood with a hand-applied finish, and upholstered options such as the Lynn Upholstered Dining Chair soften an all-wood set.
